A classic and a clunker

Seinfeld cast in Monk's Cafe

Hulu finally got all the “Seinfeld” episodes. For the past week I’ve been watching a couple at a time, grazing through the seasons in hopes of finding one I may have missed. I’m starting to think I didn’t miss any — except for the notorious finale, which I still haven’t seen, lo, these 17 years later. That’s OK. I don’t mind Seinfeld reruns. Some of these episodes […]

Must-see mayhem

May 6, 2015 by Dave Knadler

HBO’s “Game of Thrones” is one of the few TV shows that is actually better than its source material. Have you seen it? It’s a festival of bare butts and broadswords, full frontal profanity and major characters dying horribly on a weekly basis. Gratuitous? Absolutely! And rollicking fun for the whole family! I watched the first three seasons awhile back on my mother-in-law’s account. Now I’m catching […]

A vote for the Nazis

man in the high castle scene

You may have heard that Amazon, in its bid to dominate even more of your life than Facebook, is now soliciting audience opinions on which shows it should develop. Right now there are about a dozen pilots, available here for free. To be honest, most of them look dreadful, but I did take a look at “The Man in the High Castle” and decided to vote for […]

Fun with vampires

September 27, 2014 by Dave Knadler

We all have our guilty pleasures, and one of mine at the moment is “The Strain,” the TV adaptation of the books by Guillermo del Toro. It’s all about vampires taking over New York City. It’s like “The Walking Dead,” except, you know, with vampires. And an evil presence orchestrating the whole thing. You can see why it’s a guilty pleasure. But bear with me. These aren’t […]

American History ‘R’

September 24, 2014 by Dave Knadler

The past really would be just a bucket of ashes except for what it can teach about the present. The new PBS series “The Roosevelts” has at least one good lesson: In America, strong presidents are better than weak ones — unless you are a member of the foreign-tyrant or corrupt fat-cat community. We viewed all seven episodes over the past week. It’s compelling stuff. But you […]

‘Fargo’ in Bemidji

July 6, 2014 by Dave Knadler

‘Fargo,” the FX series, may be the best thing I’ve seen on the small screen since “Breaking Bad.” We finished it last night, after paying two bucks an episode via Amazon Prime. I like the pay-as-you-go method; if a show starts to stink you can save yourself some dough and make a statement at the same time. “Fargo” doesn’t stink. I’m not saying it was perfect. There […]

Vicar with a heart

June 25, 2014 by Dave Knadler

If you only watch the Hulu promo for “Rev.,” you might think it’s just another “Vicar of Dibley” or “Father Ted” — a catchphrase-heavy sitcom about zany vicars and their zany congregations. It’s actually a lot better than that. Having just watched the third (and probably final) season on Hulu, I consider it another of those miniature BBC masterpieces, like “The Office” or “Fawlty Towers.” I say […]
