All about the veterans

January 29, 2016 by Dave Knadler

Couldn't we find more flags?

Couldn’t we find more flags?

Donald Trump famously said of former POW John McCain: “I like people who weren’t captured.”

I’m guessing he also prefers warriors who weren’t wounded. But there he was last night, headlining an event that purported to raise money for all the veterans who had the bad judgment to be injured in combat. One charity mentioned: Wounded Warriors.

No one will ever accuse Trump of helping anybody but himself, but this particular cause might be a good fit. And not because it helps veterans.

According to this report in the New York Times, The Wounded Warrior Project appears to have outgrown its original mission. Now it’s more about burnishing the brand of its CEO, Steven Nardizzi. The story details widespread waste: lavish spending on first-class travel, five-star hotels, luxury retreats. (Nothing yet about drug-fueled orgies with high-class hookers, but give it time.) Even more appealing to a guy like Trump, the organization has a reputation for quickly firing anybody who expresses doubt about the corporate “culture.”

So yeah: a billionaire with contempt for veterans exploiting them as campaign props, and a corporation grown fat on their plight. One of those matches made in heaven.

I hope that one day Donald will turn to the camera that is always focused on him and say something to the effect: “You people out there with my name on your shirts are idiots. Why would I want to be president? I have all the money and power that anyone could want and 10 times more. I ran for president to show how many fools there are in this country and how they are so easily bamboozled. Look at what happened to Jon Huntsman a few years ago when the media decided that he was not a viable candidate. Look how I can block other candidates out now with my bluster. You people who support me now should not vote in this cycle. You are idiots.”

If he did that, maybe I’d vote for him.

    Welcome back, Kotter.

We presume that evolution is a one-way ratchet leading to perfection of the species. It may be that our perception of perfection is misguided. Evolution works, but perhaps in a different direction. My god, we are getting stupid.

Check out the new Olympus Pen F. That looks great to me.

Evolution is a ratchet, but it has no particular goal. The only measure of success is passing on genes to future generations. Unfortunately, that means that there is no external mechanism to help us shape our culture – it’s up to us. (And I hope that’s not just a long way of saying, “We’re doomed.”)
