So much for Christmas

January 1, 2014 by Dave Knadler

christmas tree left at the curb

Hey, free ornaments!

Here’s a sad sight on New Year’s Day: a fully trimmed Christmas tree taken out with the trash.

I know some people get sick to death of holiday details, but wouldn’t you want to save some of those ornaments? No doubt there’s a story here that I really don’t want to know. As I’ve mentioned before: We live in an odd neighborhood.

That IS odd. Everything that’s still good enough to use again goes in plastic storage boxes in the shed at our house.

I would have grabbed a few, but we’re pretty well fixed for ornaments. And fake trees.

I think there IS a story there, and probably not a very happy one. Doesn’t is tickle all those fiction-writing instincts of yours? You could spin a pretty good yarn about this if you put your mind to it. Hmmm, I may give it a shot, myself!

Now that you mention it, there was blood leaking from one of those trash bags …

Ah, I think I know this one… that’s out in front of that former thrift store at 4th and Market. They just cleaned out of there about a week ago, and in a hurry, and there’s a “for lease” sign up in the window. The way it went down gave the distinct impression it wasn’t voluntary on the part of the former residents. There’s been various thrift-store detritus on the curb off and on for about week.

It does speak of a hasty departure, doesn’t it? I used to hope something cool would occupy that space, but it doesn’t seem likely.
