So long, Mike. Been good to know you

breaking bad mike ehrmantraut demise

A man not known for his rollicking good humor.

Today I’m still kind of bummed out over the untimely death of Mike Ehrmantraut in Breaking Bad. I guess I saw it coming, but still. Mike was a bad hombre with his own hard integrity and only one weakness — his little granddaughter. He also had a wit as dry and abrasive as the New Mexico desert. A character that memorable comes along only once in a long while. If I were ever able to hire a personal assistant, it would be a guy like Mike.

I know, it’s just a TV show. And all this is tiresome for those of you who don’t watch it. But the characters and story really are Shakespearean. I hate AMC for cynically breaking the final season into two mini-seasons and delaying the conclusion until next summer, but guess what? I won’t be missing any episodes next summer. I don’t care if the ending is not what I now hope it will be. I trust these writers. Like Mike, they are extremely competent and not given to frivolity. Whatever happens, it’s going to be convincing.

It’s been a dark ride this season, hasn’t it? I have a feeling the finale next week will not show us how Walt made it to New Hampshire, and what he’s doing with an M60 machine gun in the trunk. I have a feeling we haven’t seen the last of Lydia, but are about to. And I have a feeling Jesse and Skylar may find they have something in common after all. How about you?

Sorry Dave, I can’t comment as I haven’t seen the series. I’m kind of tempted though, as you are so enthused by it….we’ll see.

As I said, I know I’m getting tiresome about this. Last time I rave about it, I promise.

I was tempted to make a comment about Shakespeare not having any M60 machine guns in his plays. But now that I think about it, if guns had been around in Shakespeare’s day, his characters absolutely would have been using them.

As a symbol of disastrous unintended consequences, I think it’s pretty effective.
