When billionaires collide

January 10, 2012 by Dave Knadler

newt gingrich

What will Newt do with an extra $5 million? Hmm.

I still think the Supreme Court’s campaign finance ruling of 2010 was a terrible victory for the plutocrats, but maybe it’s not all bad. It’s kind of gratifying to see those same plutocrats using the ruling to smear each other with raw feces.

Mitt Romney unleashed his billionaires to mug Newt Gingrich in Iowa; now Gingrich is ready to return the favor. His buddy Sheldon Adelson, who made his billions fleecing chumps at his casinos, cut Gingrich a check for $5 million. Gingrich does not plan to use the money for the betterment of mankind. He’ll use it to make the clean-cut Romney look like Jeffrey Dahmer’s evil twin. Even in 2011, $5 million can buy a lot of untreated sewage. I can’t wait to see those ads.

If there’s an upside to this, it’s that for at least short time, the plutocrats end up neutralizing each other. Both Gingrich and Romney and anyone else who gets in the way will emerge from the contest poorer and smaller and smellier than when they entered it. Now that’s money well spent.
